Carla Harryman reading from "Cloud Cantata" Pamenar Press

Cloud Cantata’s dialogues oscillate between the two readings: representation of one person’s interior thoughts and a literal exchange between two distinct people. While these distinctions blur, the concept of mingling exteriority and interiority emerges out of the pandemic intimacy to intersect with our understanding of self and other, dream and reality, memory and fantasy, proximity and distance, subject and interlocutor.

Written in the years of pandemic, Cloud Cantata contains nineteen improvised conversations. A recording of one dialogue segment can be found on the Pamenar Online Magazine. The piece, titled “A Score,” is a collaboration between Harryman and noise musician John Olson and features a stereophonic presentation of Olson’s subtly eerie electronic sounds along with Harryman’s poetry.
